Michelle McCool, WWE Women’s Champion

McCool’s path to the WWE was quite different. She was a former seventh-grade teacher in Florida who decided to enter a Find the Next Diva competition. And now, several years later, she is one of only two women to hold both the WWE women’s championship and the Divas championship. We caught up with her from Austin, Texas.

MSN: How does a school teacher become a wrestler?
McCool: [Laughs.] It was dream of mine. I always watched WWE RAW with my father and grandfather. One night, they asked, “Do you want to be the next Diva?” And I was watching with a friend of mine, and she basically dared me to do it. We McCools are very stubborn and prideful, so I decided to try. So I went out and took pictures, and, as the cliché goes, the rest is history.

MSN: Which is tougher: Getting beaten up in a ring or dealing with seventh-graders?
McCool: Oh, dealing with seventh-graders by far. I think I could handle them a lot better now. They’d be more intimidated.

MSN: Talk about being the first woman to hold both championships.
McCool: I am constantly setting goals for myself. I wanted to become a Diva. I wanted to work WrestleMania. And I wanted to be champion. And I have accomplished all of those things. I don’t think it has hit me that in 50, 100 years from now, my name will be listed among those that held the titles. No one can take that away from me.

MSN: You were a fan favorite and then turned into a merciless heel. You seem to enjoy playing a villain.
McCool: I am. It’s the all-American girl gone bad. Initially, the name callings from 6- and 7-year-olds was tough. My heart was in my stomach. But it is more fun to play someone that you are not. I think for the rest of my life, I don’t want them to ever cheer for me again.

MSN: Talk about SummerSlam and Axxess.
McCool: This year is different because we are making a weekend out of it, like WrestleMania. We love to meet the fans. And in previous years, there HAVE been some bikini sightings with the girls.

MSN: Have you packed a bikini for L.A.?
McCool: We ALWAYS pack bikinis … I have a few in my bag right now.
